NSX Edge nodes provide routing services and connectivity to networks that are external to the NSX-T Data Center deployment. VMware recommends deploying a cluster of two NSX Edge nodes for high availability. In this deployment, two NSX Edge VMs are deployed as best practice.
Follow the steps mentioned below to deploy NSX Edge VMs:
- In the NSX Manager UI, go to System > Fabric > Nodes > Edge Transport Nodes.
- Click ADD EDGE VM.
- In the Name and Descriptionwindow, the following values are used in this deployment:
- Name – NSX-Edge01
- Hostname/FQDN – NSX-Edge0.dell.local
- Form Factor– Medium
- Click NEXT.
- In the Credentials window, specify credentials for the admin, root, and optionally the audit users.
- Allow SSH Login by the admin user – Yes (optional)
- Allow SSH Login by the root user – No (optional)
- Click NEXT.
- In the Configure Deploymentwindow, the following values are used:
- Compute Manager– select the vCenter from the drop-down menuNote: In this deployment vCenter is selected.
- Cluster – select the NSX-DC cluster from the drop-down menu
- Resource Pool – optional
- Host – select a host; in this deployment, MX740c_Host-1 is selected from the drop-down menu.
- Datastore – select the Datastore-1.
- Click NEXT.
- Compute Manager– select the vCenter from the drop-down menu
- In the Configure Node Settingswindow, the following values are used:
- IP Assignment – Static
- Management IP – 172.16.11.121/24
- Default Gateway – 172.16.11.254
- Management Interface – select the Management network and click SAVE.
- Search Domain Names – dell.local
- DNS Servers – 172.16.11.120
- NTP Servers – ntp.dell.local
- Click NEXT.
- In the Configure NSXwindow, the following values are used:
- Edge Switch Name – NSX-Edge01
- Transport Zone – Edge-Overlay-TZ
- Uplink Profile – Edge-Overlay-Profile
- IP Assignment – Use Static IP List
- Static IP List – 172.16.49.121
- Gateway – 172.16.49.254
- Subnet Mask – 255.255.255.0
- Next to uplink-1 (active), click Select Interface.
- In the Select Interfacewindow:
- Type – select Virtual Switch/Distributed Virtual Port-Group.
- Select Management from the list.
- Click SAVE. The first NSX Edge VM is deployed.
- Repeat the steps above to create the second NSX Edge VM with the following changes:Note: Installation of the second NSX Edge can be started while installation of the first is in progress.
- Name - NSX-Edge02
- Hostname/FQDN - NSX-Edge02.dell.local
- Deploy the second NSX Edge VM to a different ESXi host for high availability.
- Management IP - 172.16.11.122/24
- Static IP List - 172.16.49.122
The second NSX Edge VM is now deployed. When complete, the Configuration State column shows Success and the Node Status column shows Up for both NSX Edge VMs as shown in the figure below.
