Create a rule to keep the two NSX Edge VMs on separate hosts for fault tolerance. NSX Edge hosts can run on any physical host of a vCenter cluster.
Create rule to keep NSX VMs on separate hosts
To create a rule to keep the NSX VMs on separate hosts, perform the following steps:
- In the vSphere Client, select Menu > Hosts and Clusters.
- Select the cluster in the left pane.
- In the right pane, select Configure > VM/Host Rules.
- Click Add.
- In the Create VM/Host Rule window:
- Name – enter a name such as Separate NSX Edge VMs.
- Type – select Separate Virtual Machines from the drop-down menu.
- Click Add.
- Select the two NSX Edge VMs from the list.
- Click OK to save the settings.
- Click OK to create the rule.
The following figure shows the newly created rule for the NSX Edge VMs.
Create VM group for NSX Edge VMs
To create a VM group for all the NSX Edge VMs, perform the following steps:
- In the vSphere Client, select Menu > Hosts and Clusters.
- Select the cluster in the left panel.
- In the right panel, select Configure > select VM/Host Groups.
- Click Add.
- In the Create VM/Host Group window:
- Name – enter a name such as NSX Edge VMs
- Type – VM Group
- Click Add
- Select the two NSX edge VMs from the list.
- Click OK to save the settings.
- Click OK to create the group.
Create Host group for vCenter hosts
To create a host group for all the vCenter hosts, perform the following steps:
- In the vSphere Client, on the Configure tab for the cluster, then select VM/Host Groups.
- Click Add.
- In the Create VM/Host Group window:
- Name – Enter a name in the field provided, for example, Hosts Group
- Type – Host Group
- Click Add, then click to select all the vCenter cluster hosts.
- Click OK to save the settings.
- Click OK to create the group.
Create rule for Host and VM groups
To create a rule for Host and VM groups:
- In the vSphere Client, on the Configure tab for the cluster, select VM/Host Rules.
- Click Add.
- In the Create VM/Host Rule window:
- Name – Enter a name in the field provided, for example, Hosts to NSX-Edge VMs.
- Type – select Virtual Machines to Hosts from the drop-down menu.
- Under VM Group, select the NSX Edge VMs Group.
- Select Must run on hosts in group.
- Under Host Group, select Hosts Group.
- Click OK to create the rule for host and VM groups.
