vSAN cluster and services host initial configuration

  • Note: This section covers all ESXi hosts used in the vSAN cluster and the services host. The witness host is covered in the next section.

    For initial configuration, you can use a workstation to connect to the iDRAC virtual console of each ESXi host over the OOB management network.

    In the ESXi Direct Console User Interface (DCUI), each host is configured using the values in the table below. The vmnics listed are connected to the leaf switches. Your vmnic numbers may vary. The IP addresses and VLAN are from the planning data in Table 1.

    1. In the ESXi DCUI, press F2 and log in as root.
    2. Select Configure Management Network > Network Adapters.
    3. Select the vmnics connected to the leaf switches.
    4. Clear any other vmnics if applicable.

    5. Press Enter.
    6. Select VLAN.
    7. Enter the management VLAN ID, 11 in this example.

      Note: For the deployment example used in this guide, all ESXi node-connected ports are tagged in the management VLAN. Since they are tagged, you must specify the VLAN ID here.

    8. Press Enter.
    9. Select IPv4 Configuration.
    10. Select Set static IPv4 address and network configuration. Enter the information from Table 1 as shown.

    11. Press Enter.
    12. Select DNS Configuration.
    13. Select Use the following DNS server address and hostname. Enter the information from Table 1 as shown.

    14. Press Enter.
    15. Press Esc to exit.
    16. When the Apply changes and restart management network? message displays, enter Y.
    17. On at least one host, temporarily enable the ESXi shell by selecting Troubleshooting Options > Enable ESXi Shell. This is used to test connectivity later.
    18. Press Esc to exit the Troubleshooting Options menu.
    19. Press Esc to log out.
    20. Repeat steps 1 through 19 for the other ESXi hosts in Table 1.
