Data Domain Cloud Tier (DD Cloud Tier) is a function of the Data Domain storage appliance. DD Cloud Tier provides a scalable technology that allows businesses to gain the advantages of the cloud while reducing the overall cost of the operation. DD Cloud Tier for Data Domain moves data uninterruptedly to the cloud, without additional physical storage appliances in the cloud gateway. It natively tiers deduplicated data to the cloud for long-term retention, while the metadata remains on-premises resulting in more effective storage use in the cloud. Data movement policies are managed to automatically move data from the active tier to Cloud Tier.
DD Cloud Tier is designed to keep the files and data that are infrequently accessed on an object storage that is maintained by a cloud provider and occasionally accessed. DD Cloud Tier expands deduplication to the cloud while freeing up space on the local appliance. A secondary tier of storage can be added to the DD system by using the DD Cloud Tier option for long-term backup retention. DD Cloud Tier uses DD Encryption to encrypt all the data on the DD system and ensures that the data being sent to the cloud remains secure.
