Storage admins can now create an Object Repository and run backup jobs to back up directly to the ECS (S3 Object Repository) without using a scale-out repository and writing to a disk based primary repository.
If backup jobs are defined to apply a retention period to backup sets, when the backup job is copied to the capacity tier (object backup repository), Veeam uses the S3 Object Lock functionality to apply a retention period to the backup set. ECS then marks the object as WORM and does not allow the object to be deleted until the retention period has expired.
This process means that if a ransomware attack corrupts the performance tier server or servers on which Veeam Backup & Replication has put the backup copies, the capacity tier (object backup repository) will have an uncorrupted copy of the backup set that can be used for restores.
