For the VMs to be backed up to an ECS object store, they must be written to a Veeam scale-out repository. A scale-out repository is composed of a Veeam backup repository (typically another Windows server with locally attached disk storage—known as the performance tier) and a Veeam object backup repository (which is the Dell ECS object store—known as the capacity tier).
VMs backed up to the scale-out repository are written first to the performance tier and then either:
After backups have been copied to the object repository, the administrators can remove them from the backup repository to free up space there.
Backup copies can be restored to the backup repository from the object repository at any time.
Backup sets can be restored directly from the capacity tier (object backup repository) without first being restored to the performance tier.
