Select the network settings for the VxRail cluster

  • The rows in the table in Appendix D: VxRail network configuration describe the settings required for VxRail cluster formation and management. The following should be adhered to when selecting these settings.

    This figure shows the network topology deployed by VCF on VxRail.
    The IP addresses assigned to the VxRail management components must be within the subnet range selected for the management network if no isolation. VCF 5.1 on VxRail 8.0.200 enables traffic isolation between management VMs and ESXi Management VMkernel Interfaces. This feature enables end users to configure different subnets/VLANs between ESXi mgmt DvGP and mgmt VM DvPG. Before this release, the default networking topology deployed by VCF on VxRail comprised of the ESXi host management interfaces (VMkernel interface) and management components (vCenter server, SDDC Manager, NSX components, VxRail Manager, and so on) being applied to the same distributed virtual port group (DvPG).

    The IP addresses must be unused and permanent IP addresses. They cannot be assigned by DHCP.

    • The NTP and DNS servers must be accessible to this external management network.
    • While using contiguous IP addresses is recommended for the VxRail management networks, it is not required.
    • The network range selected for vMotion and vSAN can be public or private. Use a routable IP address range If you want to ensure that these networks can expand across racks using Layer 3.
    • Hostnames and IP addresses selected for VxRail management components are automatically assigned during the initial build. You can choose to customize the hostnames or follow a preset format for hostnames.
