Regular backups of the management components ensure that you can keep your environment operational if a data loss or failure occurs. Both file-based backups and image-based backups are supported for SDDC Manager and NSX Manager. The default target for file-based backups of SDDC Manager and NSX Manager are their respective virtual appliances. With both management components, an external SFTP server can be configured to serve as a target for file-based backups.
File-based backups of SDDC Manager cannot be enabled until an external SFTP server is configured as the target device. Therefore, an external SFTP server is a pre-requisite for restoring SDDC Manager from file-based backups. With NSX Manager, file-based backups are stored on an SFTP location on the virtual appliance, and best practice dictates that an external SFTP server be provided instead for this purpose.
Note: By default, VMware Cloud Foundation does not configure any file-based or image-based backup protection for the vCenter Servers.
