  • XMPro HA and DR overview

    In terms of high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR), the XMPro application deployed on a VMware platform provides several options for ensuring the continuity of operations in the event of unexpected downtime or system failure. Some of the key features include:
    • Redundancy and failover—XMPro can support redundant servers and nodes to ensure that there is always a backup system available in case of failure. This can be configured for automatic failover to minimize downtime. XMPro supports various redundancy and failover options to ensure high availability. For example, you can configure multiple servers to act as backups for each other, so that if one server goes down, the others can automatically take over its workload. This can be done at the server level, as well as at the node level, ensuring that the system is always available.
    • Cloud-based disaster recovery—XMPro supports cloud-based disaster recovery, which allows users to store a copy of their data and applications in a secure, offsite location. This can be used to quickly restore operations in the event of a disaster or major outage. XMPro allows you to store a copy of your data and applications in a secure, offsite location in the cloud. This means that if a disaster occurs at your primary location, you can quickly restore operations by switching to the cloud-based copy. This can be done automatically, minimizing downtime, and ensuring continuity of operations.
    • Backup and restore—XMPro provides a range of backup and restore options, including database backups and file-level backups, to ensure that data is protected and can be quickly restored in case of data loss. This includes the ability to schedule regular backups, as well as the ability to restore data from a specific point in time. Additionally, XMPro supports both database and file-level backups, allowing you to tailor your backup strategy to your specific needs.
    • Import, Export, and Clone—All XMPro Objects allow you to export them as a file and import them to other instances of XMPro Products. This allows you to continue working on the same XMPro Object, such as a Data Stream or Application, in a different environment without losing your work or having to start over.

    Exporting

    All XMPro Objects (Agents, Applications, Data Streams, and Recommendations) can be exported as a file with a corresponding file extension.

    This functionality is made available on an XMPro Object's corresponding page by selecting the Export option. When an XMPro Object is exported, only the latest version is exported. Thus, if someone imports an XMPro Object, it is assigned a new ID and contains only the latest version that was exported.

    Before the exported file is created and downloaded, the user is asked for a password to encrypt the file. The person that imports the Data Stream has to enter the correct password to import it.


    Export an Object

    To export any XMPro Object, perform the following steps.

    1. Go to the page of the XMPro Object that you would like to export.
    2. Click Export (for the Data Stream Designer, click Properties first, then click Export).
    3. Choose a strong password to encrypt the file. The person importing the file must enter the same password.
    4. Click Ok.
    5. The exported file appears in your downloads.

    Import an Object

    All XMPro Objects (Agents, Applications, Data Streams, and Recommendations) can also be imported into other companies or instances of XMPro to avoid needing to replicate a particular Data Stream or Application from scratch. Importing is done from a different location than exporting, on the page for the corresponding feature.

    To import any XMPro Object, perform the following steps.

    1. Go to the page of the XMPro Object that you would like to import.
    2. Click Import.
    3. Upload the corresponding import file for the XMPro Object.
    4. Enter the password.
    5. Click Upload.

    6. Configure any details.
    7. When finished, select Save.

    Clone an Object

    To clone any XMPro Object, perform the following steps.

    1. Go to the page of the XMPro Object that you would like to clone.
    2. Click Clone.

    3. Enter a new <name> for the cloned XMPro Object.
    4. Select the version of the app that you would like to clone.

    5. Click Ok.
    The XMPro Object is cloned and you are able to see it in the list of Applications, Data Streams, or Recommendations.

    Additional XMPro features

    In addition to the above features, XMPro also provides a range of tools for monitoring and managing the system, such as real-time event boards, alerts and notifications, and analytics. This allows users to quickly identify and respond to potential issues, and to make data-driven decisions. XMPro is designed to provide a robust, scalable, and secure solution for industrial IoT applications. It is built to maintain the continuity of operations in the event of unexpected downtime or system failure, and to provide real-time insights for users to make data-driven decisions.

    VMware

    VMware is a virtualization software that allows multiple virtual machines to run on a single physical server. It can help with high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) in several ways:
    • Virtual machine failover—the VMware vSphere High Availability (HA) feature allows for automatic failover of virtual machines in the case of physical server failure. This ensures that virtual machines are quickly restarted on another available host server, minimizing downtime.
    • Site Recovery Manager (SRM)—VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) is a disaster recovery solution that automates the process of failing over virtual machines from a primary site to a secondary disaster recovery site. This can help organizations quickly recover from a disaster or an outage, while minimizing data loss and downtime.
    • Backup and restore—VMware vSphere Data Protection (VDP) and vSphere Replication (VR) provide backup and restore capabilities for virtual machines, allowing users to quickly restore data in case of data loss.
    • Virtual machine replication—VMware vSphere Replication (VR) allows for the replication of virtual machines between sites, ensuring that a copy of the virtual machines is available in case of disaster or outage. This can be used in conjunction with SRM for automatic failover.
    • Cloud-based Disaster Recovery—VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery (DR) is a cloud-based disaster recovery service that enables organizations to protect their applications and data by replicating them in the cloud. This allows organizations to quickly recover from a disaster or an outage while minimizing data loss and downtime. This can be integrated with XMPro to ensure that data and applications are always available, even in the event of a major outage or disaster.
    • Network and storage virtualization—VMware vSphere enables the virtualization of network and storage resources, which can help to improve the flexibility and scalability of the infrastructure. This can help to ensure that resources are available to virtual machines even in the event of a hardware failure or other issues.
    • Automated provisioning—VMware vSphere enables the automated provisioning of virtual machines, which can help to improve the speed and efficiency of disaster recovery and high availability operations. This can help to ensure that virtual machines are quickly brought online in the event of an outage or disaster.
    • Multicloud—VMware vCloud Director enables the deployment and management of multicloud environments, allowing multiple clouds to have a disaster recovery plan that can be activated in case of an outage or disaster in one of the clouds.
    • Security—VMware provides security features such as vShield Endpoint, vSphere Data Protection, and vSphere Replication, that allow protection of the infrastructure and data in case of a security breach or a cyberattack.

    VMware provides a comprehensive set of virtualization and disaster recovery tools that can be integrated with XMPro to provide a robust, scalable, and secure solution for industrial IoT applications. This allows organizations to ensure the continuity of operations and minimize downtime in the event of an outage or disaster, while also providing the ability to make data-driven decisions in real time.
