Increasingly, businesses are running into challenges using native cloud applications with existing large on-premises data repositories. Questions about how cloud-based applications would access and use the data include: Does the data need to move into a public cloud storage offering or can it remain in the on-premises storage architecture? If the data can remain where it is, how will it be accessed? Moving or migrating data to cloud storage is often costly and time consuming. Businesses need to plan for moving to cloud storage and change how they think about the management and expenses for these new workflows.
To help address these challenges, Dell Technologies has partnered with Snowflake to provide access to existing on-premises data repositories from the Snowflake Data Cloud. Now, data residing in a Dell ECS object storage platform is accessible using Snowflake’s external tables capabilities. Thus, on-premises data can be accessed without the need to first move or migrate it to native cloud storage, and customers can take advantage of the Snowflake capabilities that they are already familiar with. Sensitive data stays on the premises. This capability, coupled with the Dell ECS active/active architecture and Snowflake’s multicloud resiliency, provides secure, easy access and high availability.
Snowflake accounts are hosted and supported on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure. This paper focuses on the AWS architecture.
