In Full Switch mode, Dell PowerEdge MX platform gives you the option to replace the I/O modules in the case of persistent errors or failures. The MX9116n FSE and MX5108n can be replaced with another I/O module of the same type. In the case of errors or failures, replace the old IOM with a new IOM.
Follow the instructions in this section to replace a failed the I/O module.
Prerequisites:
- The replacement IOM must be a new device within the chassis deployment. Do not use an IOM that was previously deployed within the MCM group.
- The other IOM in Full Switch mode must be up, running, and healthy; otherwise a complete traffic outage may occur.
- The new IOM must have the same OS10 version as the faulty IOM.
The following is an overview of the module replacement process:
- Back up the IOM configuration.
- Physically replace the IOM.
- Verify firmware versions and configure the IOM settings.
- Restore the IOM configuration.
- Connect the cables to the new IOM.
Back up the IOM configuration
If possible, obtain a current backup of the running configuration for the IOM being replaced. The running configuration contains the current OS10 system configuration and consists of a series of OS10 commands.
For instructions on how to back up the switch configuration, find the relevant version of the User Guide in the OME-M and OS10 compatibility and documentation table.
Physically replace the IOM
Perform the following steps to physically replace an IOM:
- Identify the faulty IOM to replace.
- Carefully record the cable and port connections to ensure that the correct cables are connected to the correct ports once the replacement IOM is installed. Disconnect the cables connected to the faulty IOM.
- Remove the faulty IOM and set it aside.
- Insert the new IOM in the same slot as the failed IOM. Note: The model of the new IOM must be the same, and the new IOM must have the same version of SmartFabric OS10 as the old IOM.
- Confirm that the new IOM has been recognized by OME-M before proceeding further.
Verify firmware versions and configure the IOM settings
Verify the firmware version on the new IOM using the show version command. If required, upgrade the firmware on the new IOM. To view a pending firmware upgrade, use the show image firmware command. For more information, see the Install firmware upgrade section in the Dell SmartFabric OS10 User Guide. Find the relevant version of the User Guide in the OME-M and OS10 compatibility and documentation table.
Configure the hostname and IP management protocols (such as SNMP and NTP) on the new IOM and then restore the configuration to the new switch. For more information, see the System management chapter in the Dell SmartFabric OS10 User Guide. Find the relevant version of the User Guide in the OME-M and OS10 compatibility and documentation table.
Restore the IOM configuration
To restore a backup configuration, copy a local or remote file to the startup configuration and reload the switch.
See the Dell SmartFabric OS10 User Guide for instructions on how to restore the switch configuration. Find the relevant version of the User Guide in the OME-M and OS10 compatibility and documentation table.
Connect the cables to the new IOM
The I/O module is now ready to be used. Connect the network cables in the same configuration that was used on the failing I/O module.
