An industrial gateway is a device that is typically deployed on the plant floor, close to manufacturing devices and sensors at the edge. The primary goal of the industrial gateway is to ingest data produced on the plant floor and forward it upstream for further processing. Manufacturing devices, such as PLCs and sensors, can use a variety of different industrial protocols. Industrial gateways run unique software with drivers to connect or subscribe to distinct data sources at the edge. Additionally, industrial gateways can perform other functions such as data normalization, analytics, and filtering. These extra features help make faster decisions at the edge and facilitate less noisy data being sent upstream. This is especially beneficial when data needs to be sent over a Wide Area Network (WAN) to remote destinations. Industrial gateways differ from standard server hardware in their ability to withstand harsh environmental factors often seen on factory floors. These gateways often come with additional types of ports, such as serial, to support connecting to industrial protocols that use different types of communication media.
