Home > Data Protection > PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance > Dell PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance: Protection for Existing and Modern Workloads > Protection policy for protecting the storage array resources
From the Data Manager UI, we can create a protection policy to perform snapshots and to back up block resources by choosing the policy type Block Volume.
Data Manager enables you to create snapshots of the block volumes (volumes and volume groups) and crash consistent backups on the storage target.
In a single protection policy, for protection we can add multiple volumes and volume groups belonging to different PowerStore appliances that are discovered in Data Manager Appliance.
In the protection policy, user can configure different stages such as local snapshot and primary backup stage (backup to PowerProtect DD).
Note: The local snapshot stage and backup stage can be added to the same protection policy with different schedules.
The following figure shows the primary backup stage configuration from the protection policy in the Data Manager UI.
Notes:
The recommended minimum backup interval is six hours. Less than six hours is not recommended.
A PowerProtect DD storage unit configured as a remote system for a PowerStore Manager policy cannot be shared with a PowerProtect Data Manager policy, and likewise, the opposite is true.
The following figure shows the local snapshot stage configuration from the protection policy in the Data Manager UI.
During this stage, a snapshot of a block volume asset is created on the PowerStore storage array and saves the state of the asset and all data within it at a particular point-in-time on the storage array. Using snapshots, you can protect your data locally and restore assets to a previous state.
Note: The recommended minimum snapshot interval is 15 minutes. Less than 15 minutes is not recommended.
