The Data Domain DD9410 and DD9910 models support controller upgrades. This system upgrade process replaces the old controller (called the head unit) with the newer model, leaving the storage in place.
Source Controller | DAEs (4TB / 8 TB) | Target Controller |
DD6800 | DS60 | DD9410 or DD9910 |
DD6900 | ES40, DS60, DS600 | DD9410 or DD9910 |
DD9300 | DS60 | DD9410 or DD9910 |
DD9400 | ES40, DS60, DS600 | DD9410 or DD9910 |
DD9800 | DS60 | DD9910 |
DD9900 | DS60, DS600 | DD9910 |
SSD shelves such as the FS25 are not supported in a controller upgrade because the new models have their own SAS-4 cache tier. To upgrade the controller successfully, shut down the source controller and remove the cache tier. Swap the head unit by removing the old one and replace it with either a DD9410 or DD9910 controller. Make sure all the disks are in foreign state except the spare disks. Execute the system headswap command, which reboots the system. Check the status of the disks after the system is online and make sure everything is in use except the failed and spare disks. Enable the filesystem using the filesystem enable command.
Note: Before starting the controller upgrade, you must:
-- Apply storage migration license(s)
-- Fully populate all disk shelves.
-- Migrate any 3 TB disk shelves to 4 TB or 8 TB disk shelves. (3 TB disks are not supported in new Data Domain models and the controller upgrade will fail if we use it.)
