Extended data compression

  • PowerMax 2500 and 8500 systems include a function called extended data compression (EDC), which compresses already compressed data to gain further capacity savings. The EDC function identifies data that has not been accessed for an extended time. Data that meets the following criteria is a candidate for EDC:

    • The data belongs to a storage group that is enabled for data reduction.
    • The data has not been accessed for 30 days.
    • The data is not already compressed by EDC.

    Data that qualifies for EDC is compressed using the Def9_128_SW algorithm to further reduce the amount of capacity used to store the data. This process is an automated background process within the system. Extra savings are included in the storage-group-level achieved compression ratio. EDC is only available with PowerMax storage arrays.
