Before the build-out of the VxRail cluster, several components need to be implemented in the infrastructure. The following VxRail networks are deployed in the leaf switch infrastructure before the cluster is implemented.
Note: The cluster deployment procedures are outside the scope of this document. For the installation instructions, see the Dell VxRail Network Planning Guide and VxRail Appliance SolVe procedures (account required).
VxRail management traffic is segmented into two separate logical networks: a network that is external to service administrators, applications, and end users; and an internal network that is used solely for auto discovery and device management, isolated from the upstream network.
The internal management network, which uses VLAN 3939 by default, is used solely for device discovery by VxRail Manager during the initial implementation and node expansion.
To successfully discover all nodes in the cluster, configure VLAN 3939 on the switches and enable trunk mode on the switchports that are connected to the VxRail nodes.
The VxRail discovery process uses mDNS, a multicast-based discovery protocol.
During the initial deployment of the VxRail cluster using the VxRail manager, the necessary VxRail networks are created for the cluster to come up. These networks are VxRail external-management, vSAN network, vMotion network, and VM or workload networks.
