The Data Protection Advisor server consists of two components, the application and datastore. It is recommended that these components be installed on different servers, as installing Data Protection Advisor application and datastore on a single server is not supported. This article will not discuss the deployment architecture in detail and those requiring more information should review the Data Protection Advisor Installation and Administration Guide9 or the Data Protection Advisor 6.3 and later Deployment Architecture Guide8.
Once installed, the administrator or user of Data Protection Advisor accesses the application via a HTML-based UI hosted by that server, while the database server stores all data collected from the data protection environment using agents. A Data Protection Advisor agent is installed by default on the Data Protection Advisor application server. For smaller environments, using the Data Protection Advisor server as the only agent may be acceptable; however, larger environments do require multiple agents to be installed.
To ensure that the Data Protection Advisor server is not heavily loaded with agent data collection operations, it is recommended to install an agent on each of the backup applications to be monitored. There may also be a dedicated virtual server used as a remote agent to collect information from other elements to be monitored such as PowerProtect DD, tape library and associated switches, data servers, and so on. Using multiple agents will ensure data is collected in a timely manner, as by default some data collection requests have a five-minute data collection frequency.
