Backup and Restore

  • Users who are critical to business success are increasingly using VDI for their day-to-day productivity tasks. Consequently, the importance of protecting the VDI environment and the business value of its data has also grown as customers seek to ensure that their VDI environments meet corporate availability, recovery time objective (RTO), and recovery point objective (RPO) requirements.

    Azure backup and site recovery options

    The following Azure services offer methods of backing up VMs, data and disaster recovery:

    • Azure Site Recovery is a cloud-based, disaster recovery service that protects on-premises and cloud workloads by facilitating the replication of content from the operating systems and data disks of VMs residing in a primary site to VM disk storage in a secondary site.     • Azure Backup is a cloud-based backup service that protects on-premises and cloud workloads. It can back up both the VMs and the Azure Stack HCI host operating system. For more information, see Back up Azure Stack HCI virtual machines with Azure Backup Server.
    • Storage Replica is an Azure Stack HCI stretched cluster solution for disaster recovery that provides automatic failover to restore production quickly, and without the need for manual intervention. Storage Replica provides the replication of volumes across sites for disaster recovery, with all servers staying synchronized. For more information, see the Storage Replica overview

    Dell Avamar Virtual Edition

    Dell Avamar Virtual Edition is a data protection solution that delivers software-only data protection for virtualized environments and is ideal for the VDI use case. Avamar Virtual Edition is a fully featured data protection solution that is deployed as a virtual appliance. It supports advanced functionality such as cloud-based backup, including Azure, and change block tracking for fast backup and recovery.

    PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition

    Dell PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition is a data protection storage solution that runs as a virtual appliance on a customer's choice of hardware or on a variety of public cloud options, including Azure. For on-premises deployments, PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition is deployed as a virtual appliance on the relevant hardware platform. PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition has a single point of management with Dell Data Domain Management Center and scales up to 96 TB per instance. One of the key features of the PowerProtect DD storage protection solution is DD Boost, which provides advanced integration with data protection applications such as Avamar Virtual Edition to enable client-side deduplication, thus accelerating backup.

    FSLogix

    Replicate user profiles on SMB fileshares to a second location using FSLogix. The FSLogix agent can support multiple profile storage locations if you configure the registry entries for FSLogix. If the first location is unavailable, the FSLogix agent will automatically fail over to the second. This may be most suitable for non-persistent VDI desktop deployments.
