Dell Integrated System (DIS) for Azure Stack HCI provides a flexible, highly available, and cost-effective platform to host Online Transactional Processing (OLTP) and Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) workloads such as SQL Server 2022, which is anticipated to be released prior to the end of 2022.
Many customers use Microsoft SQL Server as the back end for many of their business-critical applications such as webapps, data staging, and SQL integration and reporting services. SQL Server supports a high volume of transactions and has an easy to setup framework.
A flexible deployment platform that allows customers to choose to run their SQL Server environments on top of virtual machines (VMs) with Windows Server or Linux is key for mission-critical databases. DIS for Azure Stack HCI allows customers to consolidate multiple databases by adding more VMs or containers to the environment as necessary.
DIS for Azure Stack HCI enables building a business continuity solution through the integration with Azure, continuously replicating data to and from the cloud.
Azure Arc-enabled SQL Servers are also a deployment option for SQL Server 2022 and constitute a simple way to extend Azure services outside the public cloud to your data center, or an edge location.
DIS for Azure Stack HCI uses Windows Server Failover Clustering with SQL Server (WSFC) to run SQL Server on VMs if there is a hardware failure.
SQL Server uses Always On Availability Groups (AGs) which provide database-level high availability that can help in the event of application and software failures.
Dell Azure Stack HCI can also use Always On Failover Cluster Instances (FCI) based on Storage Spaces Direct technology for shared storage.
This document will describe hardware and software of Azure Stack HCI and highlight key components of the solution which includes the Dell AX-7525 Azure Stack HCI nodes, SQL Server 2022, Windows Admin Center (WAC), and Dell OpenManage integration with Windows Admin Center (OMIMSWAC).
The reference architecture will also describe solution deployment, test methodology and tools, performance results, key best practices, and performance tuning recommendations.
