Introduction
BGP is an IP reachability protocol that is used to exchange IP prefixes. Traditionally, each BGP peer is configured with an IPv4 address to establish a session over which to exchange the prefixes. When the BGP peer advertises an IPv4 prefix, it must include an IPv4 next hop address, which is the address of the advertising router that we just configured.
The Unnumbered BGP standard defined in the RFC5549 no longer requires an IPv4 prefix to be advertised along with an IPv4 next hop. This means BGP peers can exchange IPv4 prefixes without having to configure an IPv4 address on each switch. The interfaces used by BGP are unnumbered when it comes to IPv4 addresses.
This technical note provides details of Unnumbered BGP protocol deployment in VXLAN BGP EVPN data center fabrics using Dell EMC PowerSwitches and SmartFabric OS10 network operating system.
