VXLAN provides a mechanism to stretch a Layer2 network over a Layer3 network in data centers by encapsulating the Layer2 frames in a Layer3 network. Each stretched overlay is the VXLAN segment identified by a VNI.
Integrated Routing and Bridging (IRB) is a technique where the routing and switching takes place over the same interface and BGP EVPN uses this for routing between different VXLAN segments identified by VNI.
The frameworks in RFC 7432 (BGP EVPN) and RFC 7348 (VXLAN) deal with providing EVPN-based Layer2 and Layer3 services based on IRB.
This technical note provides details of Symmetric IRB deployment in VXLAN BGP EVPN data center fabrics using Dell EMC PowerSwitches and the SmartFabric OS10 network operating system.
