The seamless interoperation of O-DUs and O-RUs from different vendors hinges on the use of O‑RAN-based standardized messaging across open interfaces. The use of such standardized interfaces is a fundamental enabler of both lower cost and innovation in an open RAN architecture.
Considering the architectural elements developed in the RAN, integration of an E2E O‑RAN system capable of exploiting interlayer open communications and AI/ML optimized features provides a viable alternative to traditional closed systems. As operators demand flexibility to mix and match equipment from different vendors and the ability to stage equipment for integration, interoperability, and benchmarking, they require services that bring these verification elements together. Dell, through its Open Telecom Ecosystem Lab (OTEL) [7] [8], is well positioned to provide O-RAN ecosystem players with holistic services that allow them to validate their offerings for multi-vendor solutions. Moreover, it can also serve as a staging area for O-RAN players to develop reference architectures and showcase the optimal network designs that can be enabled through this pervasive interoperability.
