For virtual-machine protection policies, data is moved using one of two types of protection mechanisms:
Starting with Data Manager Appliance version 5.14.0.0, the Microsoft SQL Server application agent supports the Transparent Snapshot Data Mover (TSDM) protection mechanism for VM Direct application-aware workflow. TSDM features a near-zero latency impact on the virtual machines during snapshot creation. Transparent Snapshots can now scale up to 5,000 virtual machines by using an existing external VM Direct engine as the control path, allowing you to overcome other environmental resource constraints when protecting at scale.
Note: Starting with Data Manager Appliance version 5.13.0.0, encrypted virtual machines can be backed up and restored using the Transparent Snapshots mechanism, when the installed vSphere version is 8.0b or later.
