The solution pools all the storage resources together, leaving no resources stranded.
Dell APEX Block Storage stores two mirrored copies of each block of data. When a volume is created, that the data for that volume gets spread across all the disks running across all instances. Upon write, the SDS writes a chunk to one disk and another SDS writes the mirrored chunk to another disk. This process automatically protects data, and optimizes and balances resources, based on each application’s needs.
There are three basic types of storage capacity:
Storage | Raw capacity per SDS instance | Use case |
EBS gp3 | c5n.9large: 5,10,20,40 TB | Data is persistent during planned or unplanned shutdowns. |
NVMe SSD | i3en.metal: 8 x 7.5 TB (60TB) i3en.12xlarge: 4 x 7.5 TB (30 TB)
| Extreme performance. Data does not persist following either a planned or unplanned shutdown. A backup solution is recommended. |
Raw storage capacity per instance | EC2 instance used | Underlying storage media | Recommended Min raw capacity per cluster | Max IOPs / instance | Supported config (Single vs Multi AZ) |
5TB | c5n.9xlarge | gp3 - EBS Volumes | 15TB | 40K | Single / Multi AZ |
10TB | c5n.9xlarge | gp3 - EBS Volumes | 30TB | 40K | Single / Multi AZ |
20TB | c5n.9xlarge | gp3 - EBS Volumes | 60TB | 40K | Single / Multi AZ |
30TB | i3en.12xlarge | EC2 - Local NVMe SSD | 90TB | 260K | Multi AZ |
40TB | c5n.9xlarge | gp3 - EBS Volumes | 120TB | 40K | Single / Multi AZ |
60TB | i3en.metal | EC2 - Local NVMe SSD | 180TB | 260K | Single AZ |
