Dell Technologies is excited to announce the release of PowerStoreOS 4.0. Dell PowerStore is the fastest-ramping new storage platform in Dell history. It provides an all-flash enterprise system that is adaptable, intelligent, and continuously modern. With AI and GenAI significantly transforming the industry, massive data growth, and rising energy costs, PowerStore can help you stay agile. PowerStoreOS 4.0 has many innovative features that help with expanding workloads and performance, such as data-in-place (DIP) upgrades. The release increases efficiency with improved data reduction and the ability to set quality of service (QOS) on volumes or volume groups. Resiliency is refined with Metro Volume and native replication enhancements, and scalability improvements.
This blog will focus on the Universal import type, which makes it simple to migrate your applications and data to PowerStore. Please check out the PowerStore section of InfoHub for a wealth of information including whitepapers, hands-on labs, and videos.
PowerStoreOS 4.0 and below natively supports importing from many different types of storage systems, but we don’t encompass them all. The native import support allows PowerStore to directly talk to the source storage system control path to manage the import process. Support includes many Dell and third-party source storage systems. PowerStoreOS 4.0 brings the Universal import type to the platform. The Universal import type doesn’t communicate to the source system’s control path, instead it just imports via the data path. The result is agentless import support for a wide range of block storage systems without the customization in our code for each system type. For maximum flexibility, FC and iSCSI connections are supported. Please check the Dell PowerStore Simple Support Matrix on the Dell E-Lab Navigator for supported Universal type storage systems and related details. If your source storage system isn’t on the list, simply open an RPQ to get approval. You can walk through the native and Universal type import process with the Dell Hands-on Lab at PowerStore – Importing External Storage or check out other labs at the Dell Democenter website. If you don’t already have an account, simply create one and authenticate. Search for HOL-0515-03 to locate the PowerStore – Importing External Storage lab to get real experience with the process in PowerStore Manager. The screenshot below in Figure 1 shows the native import types available and the new Universal import type in PowerStore Manager. Figure 2 shows adding a Universal import type system.
