The Dell SAP engineering team performed extensive validation testing on PowerVault ME5 storage in accordance with the SAP HANA-HWC-ES-1.1 certification scenario, using the SAP HANA hardware configuration check tool HCMT. The tests validated that PowerVault ME5 meets SAP performance requirements and ensures the highest availability for database persistence on disk.
Note: SAP recommends that TDI customers run the SAP HANA 2.0 HCMT tool in their environment to ensure that their specific SAP HANA TDI implementation meets the SAP performance criteria.
Dell Technologies has certified the PowerVault ME5024 and ME5084 models in a dual-controller configuration only for running SAP HANA. All PowerVault ME5 arrays use the same ME5 controllers, which are equipped with Intel® Xeon® processors and 16 GB of memory per controller. See Table 3 for the technical specifications.
SAP has certified PowerVault ME5 storage for SAP HANA for using the FC protocol and the SAP fcClient storage connector. For information about the host and network requirements for the FC connectivity protocol, see Network design considerations.
To determine the proper storage system model, number, number of front-end FC I/O ports, and disk configuration for an SAP HANA TDI deployment, you need the following information:
An SAP HANA node is either a single (scale-up) SAP HANA server or an SAP HANA worker node that is part of an SAP HANA multihost cluster. You can connected multiple SAP HANA nodes to a PowerVault ME5 storage system up to a recommended maximum number. For more information, see SAP HANA capacity requirements.
Dell engineering performed extensive testing using the SAP HANA-HWC-ES-1.1 certification scenario to determine the scalability of the PowerVault ME5 product. Scalability refers to the supported number of worker nodes.
The following table shows the number of SAP HANA nodes that are supported on a specified PowerVault ME5 storage system model in production deployments. These numbers represent the recommended maximum number of SAP HANA production nodes that can be connected to the PowerVault ME5 system.
The first column in the table shows the PowerVault ME5 models that have been certified. Each array has two storage controllers, and each node has two four-port FE I/O modules.
The second column shows the number of production SAP HANA nodes that can be deployed on a PowerVault ME5 array using fully redundant FC SAN connectivity.
PowerVault ME5 model | Number of SAP HANA nodes per ME5 array |
ME5024 | 14 |
ME5084 | 14 |
Note: SAP HANA standby nodes in an SAP HANA scale-out cluster are not counted for scalability because they do not have a storage persistence.
Achieving the scalability numbers shown in Table 3 in a customer environment requires:
Note: Four FE ports per PowerVault ME5 controller (eight FE ports per array) are required for the maximum number of SAP HANA nodes.
