With the launch of the highly anticipated PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance, which simplifies the user experience, allows for protection of existing and modern workloads, and provides secure operational resiliency, we wanted to take a moment to highlight how easy it is to plan for and deploy the DM5500.
Our goal was to provide our customers with simple yet resilient deployments—and the DM5500 delivers on those fronts. You can deploy the new PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance in less than 30 minutes. (As a matter of fact, our deployment numbers show an average of around 18 minutes!) Let’s take a look!
Planning – what do I need?
How does it work?
Connect the management workstation to the service port on the back of the appliance, launch a browser and connect to https://192.168.100.100 to access the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance, then log in using the admin credentials.
Note: The initial password is the appliance serial number (PSNT) with the prefix “dm@”.
Create secure credentials
Configure the network: Management IP, data IP(s), VLAN IDs, and NTP, as shown in the following two figures.
Note: You can select to separate Data Network from the Management network by selecting the Separate Data Network checkbox.
Ensure that the service laptop time is not off by more than ten minutes as compared to UTC time!
On the Summary page, review your settings, and when ready, click Apply.
The system displays a progress bar that outlines the deployment steps. In about eight minutes, the process should complete.
So that was about six screens, eight clicks, and roughly 15 minutes from start to finish to deploy!!
When the deployment has completed, the user is redirected to login to the appliance!
Resiliency – what if an error occurs?
During deployment, if the wrong IP or DNS is used, the system generates an error with a descriptive message. The user can then go back, fix the error, and apply the configuration again!
Ok, great! My DM5500 is deployed, now what?
When the deployment is complete, you are required to log into the appliance using the newly created credentials. Once logged in, you will see the Get Started widgets that will guide you through licensing, dial-home, discovering and protecting assets, and configuring security.
You can either walk through these wizards or click Launch to access the dashboard!
Now that the system is deployed, you can start protecting workloads using the latest technologies such as Transparent Snapshots and Dynamic NAS. You will find many resources below covering use-cases in detail. We’ll highlight some of those in upcoming blogs!
