90% of modern server environment operators report increased value/effectiveness from hybrid cloud initiatives versus just 62% of those running legacy server shops.i
Many organizations realize that this status quo, however common, can’t persist if they truly want to pursue IT transformation.
But making a shift toward unifying both cloud and on-premise infrastructure is hard. According to a new ESG reporti, 82% of organizations use multiple infrastructure providers today, and most expect to add more infrastructure providers in the future.
Connecting different infrastructures isn’t an easy thing to do. But organizations need that shift, and want to connect the on-premise cloud-like infrastructures to multiple public clouds -- creating a hybrid cloud.
But there’s a problem. Most organizations with on-premise infrastructure built it with compute virtualization using vSphere. Many of these have even extended the value of their compute virtualization by adding VMware vSAN™ software- defined storage as a replacement or adjunct to existing storage solutions. Some have even created VMware-based private clouds.
These organizations are deeply familiar with VMware and want to leverage those skills, and that investment, while gaining the operational and business advantages of a unified cloud. And until now, that’s been challenging. Some public clouds have lacked hybrid offerings. Others would force an organization to toss out VMware skills, capabilities, and advantages while migrating and/ or refactoring their applications. This complexity, and the associated costs, explains why not many enterprises, and even fewer small businesses, have a hybrid cloud today.
VMware saw these issues and delivered VMware Cloud Foundation to address the challenge. VMware intends for it to become the right approach for organizations who want to leverage their VMware expertise as they rely on cloud capabilities for IT transformation. With it, organizations of all sizes can create a seamless end-to-end hybrid cloud infrastructure, binding together their on-premise hardware with resources in the public cloud under one umbrella: management interface, processes, and outcomes. It aims to clarify organizational cloud confusion without disrupting investment in VMware virtualization— unifying both on-premise and cloud, cutting complexity, combining capacity, and controlling costs. In short, it lets organizations use their VMware competence in new, transformative ways.
But there’s a problem--that’s also an opportunity. ESG research shows that modern hardware increases the value and effectiveness of hybrid cloud initiativesi. Most organizations are looking for new infrastructure that’s built, from the ground up, to be a perfect fit for their new cloud. That’s why, in this paper, we’re going to explore the value of VMware Cloud Foundation™ on Dell EMC™ PowerEdge MX. Since Dell EMC PowerEdge and VMware are the industry leaders in x86 servers, virtualization and Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI), they aim to bring organizations into the world of hybrid cloud.
