Non-Disruptive Migration (NDM) is a migration technology that provides a method for migrating data from a source array to a target array over a metro distance, though typically is done within a single data center. NDM utilizes Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) as its method of migration and therefore both the source and target array must be configured with SRDF before a migration is possible.
When migrating to the PowerMax there are three implementations of NDM each for a different type of source array:
Contact Dell for the ePacks required for HYPERMAX OS 5977 and Enginuity 5876. In addition, the NDM support matrix has information on array operating systems support, host support, and multipathing support for NDM operations. The support matrix is available on the eLab Navigator.
In PowerMaxOS 10, Dell introduced PowerMax Data Mobility which is a tool utilizing the MDM interface to migrate VMAX, PowerMax or competitive arrays to PowerMaxOS 10.
Regulatory or business requirements for disaster recovery may require the use of replication to other arrays attached to source array, the target array, or both using SRDF/S, during the migration. In this case, contact Dell for the ePacks required for the SRDF/S configuration.
The following is an example of the NDM operations involved in a migration from a VMAX3 to PowerMax:
Some key features of NDM are:
NDM is fully supported with VMware environments and may aid migrations of larger environments, providing a viable alternative to Storage vMotion.
