This whitepaper describes how the VMware vSphere platform works with Dell PowerMax storage systems and software technologies. It is not designed to be read as a traditional book, rather to be utilized as a reference on the desired topic.
As part of an effort to improve and enhance the performance and capabilities of its product lines, Dell periodically releases revisions of its hardware and software. Therefore, some functions described in this document may not be supported by all versions of the software or hardware currently in use. For the most up-to-date information on product features, refer to the product release notes.
This whitepaper is not designed to be the definitive source of supported products and features of PowerMax and VMware. Both Dell and VMware have extensive compatibility matrices which should be consulted when determining whether a particular platform or feature is supported. The whitepaper will refer to these throughout when covering features.
This document is intended for use by storage administrators, system administrators and VMware administrators.
Readers of this document are expected to be familiar with the following topics:
Note: This whitepaper covers PowerMaxOS through version 10.1.0.0 (6079) and vSphere 8.0.1 (U2).
Note: Examples provided in this guide cover methods for performing various VMware vSphere activities using PowerMax systems and Dell software. These examples were developed for laboratory testing and may need tailoring to suit other operational environments. Any procedures outlined in this guide should be thoroughly tested before implementing in a production environment.
