This section describes how Dell EMC PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is deployed and replicates data from the production system deployed on a two-layer PowerFlex cluster. In this solution, Dell EMC PowerProtect Cyber Recovery Vault is deployed in the VMware ESXi.
Note: The solution is validated in engineering lab using two-layer PowerFlex system with VMware vSphere environment, but the reference architecture and the best practices that are demonstrated in this white paper are applicable to both virtualized and bare metal configurations and other PowerFlex family products.
The following diagram shows logical architecture that is deployed on a two-layer PowerFlex cluster setup with four storage-only nodes and four compute-only nodes.
Production environment —Production environment is deployed on 2-layer PowerFlex cluster containing storage-only nodes deployed on embedded operating system, running the SDS component and compute-only nodes deployed on VMware hypervisor, running the SDC component.

The customers production data is protected and managed by Dell EMC PowerProtect Data Manager which stores the backup data on the production PowerProtect DD series. In a Dell EMC PowerProtect CR solution, production PowerProtect DD series replicate the data to a vault PowerProtect DD series in the CR Vault.
Vault environment—The Dell EMC PowerProtect Cyber Recovery Vault environment contains a PowerProtect DD series and the Dell EMC PowerProtect Cyber Recovery management host that runs the Dell EMC PowerProtect Cyber Recovery software. Data from the production environment enters the Dell EMC PowerProtect Cyber Recovery Vault environment through PowerProtect DD series MTree replication.
The infrastructure in the Dell EMC PowerProtect Cyber Recovery vault is deployed on VMware ESXi cluster.
Additional safeguards include an automated operational logical air gap to provide network isolation from the production network.
