External network errors on any of the interfaces that are handling data traffic is a cause for concern. A sustained error rate is a definite indication of a problem between the NIC on the node and the switch. The components in the path include the transceivers connected to the node’s NIC and the switch, the cabling, the node’s NIC itself and the switch. Occasional errors on individual interfaces over the course of weeks is generally acceptable.
