Planning for connected subscription licensing

  • Starting with version 4.5.1 of Cloud Foundation on VxRail, support for VMware’s subscription licensing option was introduced. The connected subscription licensing option involves more planning and preparation steps required of the customer, as compared to the other licensing options.

    At the start of the Cloud Foundation on VxRail services engagement, Dell Professional Services creates an outline of the tasks and decision points for connected subscription licensing. During this planning and design phase, Dell Professional Services outlines the tasks that are the responsibility of the customer. These include:

    • Establish a profile on the VMware Cloud site. This is the first step to enable subscription licensing from VMware.
    • Create an organization for subscription license assignment and management after a profile is established on the VMware cloud site.
    • Determine the number of capacity units for the subscription licenses. The formula for the total number of CPU cores required for subscription licensing is: Number of cores per CPU+CPUs per VxRail node+number of VxRail nodes planned for Cloud Foundation on VxRail instance.
    • Determine the total number of planned Cloud Foundation on VxRail workload domains. Starting with version 4.5.1, the maximum number of workload domains, including the management domain, increased from four to eight.
    • Prepare the data center network to enable connectivity between the vCenter Cloud Gateway and the VMware Cloud site.

    While these tasks are being undertaken, Dell Professional Services can schedule the installation of the VxRail hardware in the data center. Do not start the deployment of the Cloud Foundation on VxRail management domain until you have completed all of these tasks.
