Enabling subscription licensing

  • The deployment of the Cloud Foundation on VxRail management domain should closely coincide with the purchase of the subscriptions. This is by design so that you can deploy vCenter Cloud Gateway on the management domain, and establish connectivity with the VMware Cloud to enable subscription licensing.

    You can find the complete steps to deploy VMware’s vCenter Cloud Gateway on the VMware Cloud Documentation site under ‘vCenter Cloud Gateway Administration’. The key points to understand for a Cloud Foundation on VxRail deployment include:

    • The virtual appliance must be deployed on the Cloud Foundation on VxRail management domain to enable subscription metering and tracking.
    • SDDC Manager on the Cloud Foundation on VxRail management domain must have connectivity to vCenter Cloud Gateway.
    • The vCenter Cloud Gateway must be able to connect to the VMware Cloud. This requires port 443 to be open through the firewall to connect to the VMware Cloud site.
    • The round-trip latency between the VMware Cloud and the vCenter Cloud Gateway cannot exceed 300 ms.
    • The credentials used to connect the vCenter Cloud Gateway to the VMware Cloud must be assigned the Organization Owner role in the Organization with the subscription licenses.

    After the vCenter Cloud Gateway virtual appliance is deployed, you can establish connectivity to the VMware Cloud and use SDDC Manager to register the Cloud Foundation on VxRail instance. At this point, you can activate the subscription.

    Important: No workload domains can be deployed on the Cloud Foundation on VxRail instance until all of the necessary steps are completed to activate the subscription licenses. There is a 60-day grace period from the time the Cloud Foundation on VxRail management domain is deployed to activate the subscriptions. Failure to activate the subscriptions within this 60-day grace period will require a new Dell Professional Services engagement to reset and rebuild the Cloud Foundation on VxRail instance.
