Understanding volume names

  • The storage team used the following naming convention for PowerFlex volumes:

    • TM—The internal name for this Oracle Big Data SQL solution was Titanium (TM). Use of internal names enables multiple programs to run in parallel with clarity and understanding.
    • VM—Indicates VMware vSphere storage (RDM and VMFS) were used.
    • Application name—ORACLE, NOSQL, and SQL for Microsoft SQL Server were used to indicate the application. In the case of Hadoop, MS indicates Hadoop Name Node and DN indicates a Worker Node.
    • Purpose of storage—Operating System (OS), DATA, REDO, TEMP, and LOG were used to indicate the purpose of the volume.

    For example, the volume name TM_VM_ORACLE_DATA indicates that the storage volume is part of the Titanium (Oracle Big Data SQL Solution) solution, uses VMware storage, contains the Oracle application, and stores database datafiles.
