Dell EMC HCI solutions VxRail and vSAN Ready Nodes are well suited for workload consolidation scenarios and hosting highly demanding business applications. PMem can provide significant cost benefits for those platforms while keeping performance at the same levels.
In comparing a pure DRAM configuration that is based on a PowerEdge R750 server with a DRAM and PMem server, significant savings can be achieved, as expressed in the following chart:
Figure 7. DRAM vs DRAM+PMem cost comparison (Dell PowerEdge R750)
As shown in the preceding diagram, a PMem based memory configuration offers savings of up to 45 percent in memory cost. When IT budgets flatten or decrease and DRAM costs rise, PMem represents a huge cost savings opportunity.
This comparison covers the memory cost, and not overall system cost. Moving from a pure PowerEdge scenario to a server and vSphere and vSAN-based one—as with VxRail and Dell EMC vSAN Ready Nodes—yields significant system cost savings when comparing a DRAM-only configuration with a mixed, DRAM, and PMem.
The achievable cost reduction at a platform level is measured at more than 20 percent, as shown in the following figure:
