Configuration details | - Within ESXi vSphere web client, go to Manage > Security & Users > Authentication and click Join domain.
- Fill out the Domain name, username, and password settings, where the username is an AD user who has privileges to authenticate to AD.
- Confirm that domain membership status is listed as OK after applying the settings.
- Create an ESXi Admins group within AD and add the appropriate administrators to this account.
|
Verification steps | - Log out of the ESXi vSphere web client.
- Log in again by entering the AD user credentials that are part of the ESXi Admins group (for example, test@organization.com).
- Confirm that the user successfully logs in.

Helpful tips | - ESXi must be able to resolve the Active Directory domain. It could be easiest to point ESXi's DNS to the AD server (as alternate or primary).
- Verify that AD and ESXi are synchronized to the same NTP server.
- ESXi can be modified to use existing AD groups and not just ESXi Admins. For more information, see Configuring the ESXi host with Active Directory authentication.
