Starting with SQL Server 2017 (14.x), SQL Server has the same underlying database engine on all supported platforms, including Linux and containers. Many existing features and capabilities of SQL Server can be used regardless of the operating environment in which it is deployed. As a result, SQL Server on Linux is gaining popularity and is easy to deploy. This section provides an example of and best practices for deploying SQL Server on Linux with PowerMax storage.
Some differences from running SQL Server on Windows Server include the lack of clustering support such as WSFC and management tools such as SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). However, SSMS can be deployed on Windows and connect over the network to the SQL Server instances running on Linux.
Some of the advantages of running SQL Server on Linux include using native Linux features such as its logical volume manager (LVM) to create striped file systems, UDEV rules that create user-friendly aliases to storage volumes, native Linux package installation, and more.
