Deploy the first NSX Manager appliance

Deploy the first NSX Manager appliance

  • The NSX Manager provides a web-based user interface to manage the NSX-T environment. In production environments, VMware recommends deploying a cluster of three NSX Manager nodes for high availability.

    To deploy the first NSX Manager, perform the following steps.

    1.  Using the vSphere Client, log in to the vCenter Server,  vcenter01.dell.lab. 
    2.  Select  Menu  >  Hosts and Clusters. 
    3.  In the left pane, right-click the VxRail cluster and click  Deploy OVF template. 
    4.  On the Select an OVF template page, browse to the NSX-T unified appliance .ova file, and click Open. In this example, the file is named nsx-unified-appliance-version.ova. 
    5.  Click  NEXT. 
    6.  On the Select a name and folder page: 
      1.  Assign a name for the first NSX Manager appliance VM. In this example, it is nsxmgr01. 
      2.  Under location, select the existing data center and click NEXT. 
    7.  On the  Select a compute resource page, the VxRail cluster is selected. Click NEXT. 
    8.  Review the details and click NEXT. 
    9.  Select the configuration size. In this example,  Medium is used.

    10.  Click  NEXT. 
    11.  On the Select storage page, the VxRail vSAN datastore is selected. Click  NEXT. 
    12.  On the Select networks page, select the Management Network and IPv4. Click NEXT. 
    13.  On the Customize template page, the following values are used: 
      Note: The remaining items on the page are left at their default settings for this example.

      1.  Enter the root and admin passwords for the nsxmgr01 VM. 
      2.   Hostname – nsxmgr01.dell.lab 
      3.   Rolename – NSX Manager (default) 
      4.   Default IPv4 Gateway – 172.18.11.254 
      5.   Management Network IPv4 Address – 172.18.11.82 
      6.   Management Network Netmask – 255.255.255.0 
      7.   DNS Server – 172.19.11.50 
      8.   Domain Search List – dell.lab 
      9.   NTP server – ntp.dell.lab 
    14.  Click NEXT, review the settings, and click FINISH. 
      Note: Installation may take 5-10 minutes.

    15.  When the installation is complete, power on the NSX Manager VM. 

    (Optional) To verify NSX Manager connectivity on the Management network, perform the following steps:

    1. In the vSphere Client, open the NSX Manager VM console.
    2. When the NSX Manager has finished booting, login as the admin user.
    3. Verify DNS name resolution and network connectivity by pinging other hosts by their FQDNs. In the following figure, nsxmgr01 successfully pings the host named  vxrail01 and vcenter01.
