vMotion migration enables you to migrate a powered-on VM from one system resource to another. This migration can be “cold migration” or “hot migration.” With cold migration, the VM is taken offline to perform the migration. With hot migration, the VM remains operational, as does the application running on the VM guest operating system.
As a part of the prerequisites for vMotion migration, the storage that contains the virtual machine disks must be shared between the source host and target hosts.
The shared storage and network design meets these requirements for vMotion migration: Both ESXi hosts meet the shared storage requirements. All the storage volumes include VM operating system volumes. The RAC database volumes including OCR, TEMP, DATA, REDO, and FRA are in the PowerStore storage that is shared by both source and target ESXi hosts. Both source and target hosts are connected through the vMotion network.
