The Weathervane Auction application is a scalable web application that implements a website for hosting real-time auctions. In addition to the core application that implements the business logic, a wide variety of support services such as caching, messaging, NoSQL datastore, and relational database tiers are available. The following figure shows the Weathervane Auction application:
VMmark 3.x uses two instances of the Weathervane application, a static instance and an elastic instance, as shown in the following figure:
In the static instance, all the services run in their own virtual machines. In the elastic instance, the message server, load balancer, and NoSQL data service (highlighted in blue) share a single virtual machine.
The static instance creates a relatively consistent workload on the system under test (SUT). On the other hand, the elastic instance creates an elastic and bursty workload.
For the Weathervane application, the Quality-of-Service (QoS) metric for each workload represents the normalized average response times for all the various operation types that Weathervane performs during a run. This metric is reported separately for the static and elastic instance of the Weathervane application.
