The DVD Store Version 3 (DS3) ecommerce application includes a back-end database component, a web application layer, and driver programs. The DS3 driver simulates users logging in to a web server, browsing a catalog of products, selecting items for purchase, and then either checking out or continuing to shop. The DS3 workload used in VMmark 3.x uses four virtual machines, three web servers (DS3WebA, DS3WebB, DS3WebC), and one database server, as shown in the following figure:
One web server delivers constant load to the database throughout the benchmark run. The other two web servers deliver periodic load to the database during the benchmark run to create a bursty workload profile and varying resource demands. For the DS3 application, the QoS metric for each workload represents the average application latencies in milliseconds. This metric is reported separately for the dvdstoreA, dvdstoreB, and dvdstoreC.
