Considering the significant impact that an outage has on an organization’s business continuity, companies look for active-active strategies that can:
Dell has several active-active initiatives, such as VPLEX, a solution for storage virtualization and business continuity. VPLEX can handle mission-critical applications such as Oracle, VMware, SQL, and VDI. VPLEX uses a Cache Coherence algorithm to update blocks synchronously between data centers. VPLEX creates writes at both sites, and data is processed at both sites for more availability and continuous operations. For example, VPLEX active-active replication supports mission-critical applications such as Oracle RAC. Dell supports several Oracle RAC deployment options using multiple storage nodes in a cluster.
Many customers rely on VPLEX to ensure business continuity due to the robustness, flexibility, and protection that VPLEX offers. Using VPLEX, customers can lower their RPO and RTO requirements to zero, ensure that storage layer resources are always available and always on, and know that the data on Site One is the same as the data on Site Two.
Another key VPLEX feature is that it eliminates the need for application migration, because it can virtualize storage devices, create distributed volumes, and distribute them between arrays and data centers. VPLEX allows ease of use and clean migrations without the risk of the traditional engagement of application-level migration, and it enables users to migrate between Dell and third-party systems based on a certification matrix.
VPLEX is based on hardware controllers, with memory and connectivity that stands between storage systems and hosts, and it can scale in performance by adding appliances in a linear fashion. Depending on networking requirements, you can connect sites using FC or IP WAN.
