Splunk is an analytics platform that enables you to gain visibility and insight into data, quickly and at scale, in order to take meaningful action for business and operational advantages. Dell Technologies has enabled solutions for Splunk for many years. This current white paper describes a validated design for Splunk Enterprise with SmartStore, in a cloud native deployment using containers with Kubernetes orchestration, running on Dell infrastructure.
The Kubernetes platform used in this design is the Robin Cloud Native Platform (CNP) from Robin.io, which is a component of the Dell Validated Design for Analytics – Data Lakehouse. The compute infrastructure is based on Intel-powered Dell PowerEdge servers and the design leverages Splunk SmartStore for efficient management of storage resources for hot, warm, and cold bucket data. Dell Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS) is used as the storage infrastructure for SmartStore.
Splunk can be used across a wide range of industries. In this design, Dell Technologies focuses on IT operations. In the hierarchy of operational maintenance disciplines, there was traditionally either reactive or preventative maintenance. With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), IT personnel are now able to effectively perform predictive maintenance. Predictive maintenance is a methodology that uses data analytics and modeling to make predictions about future outcomes, such as determining the timing and likelihood of failures in IT infrastructure.
Splunk Enterprise on Dell infrastructure can be applied to a wide variety of use cases. This paper examines the example of predictive maintenance in IT operations as a representative use case.
