This section provides a solution overview of deploying containerized SQL Server 2022 on Red Hat OCP with Data Foundation as a persistent block storage while running T-SQL queries against unstructured data on Dell ObjectScale instance.
Running Red Hat OCP with Red Hat ODF offers a powerful and comprehensive solution for modern enterprises.
The Red Hat OCP provides a robust containerization platform and Kubernetes-based orchestration framework that enables organizations to build, deploy, and manage applications and databases efficiently across on-premises and multicloud environments.
The Red Hat ODF brings persistent and scalable block storage for containerized applications and databases. By combining the two technologies, it provides an integrated, enterprise-grade storage and processing infrastructure.
Microsoft SQL Server 2022 is a powerful database platform. It introduces new features that enhance its capabilities as a leading relational database management system.
The analytics feature of Microsoft SQL Server 2022 revolutionizes the way organizations extract valuable insights from disparate data sources. This feature introduces object storage integration to the data platform, enabling users to integrate SQL Server with S3-compatible object storage.
Polybase technology was first introduced in SQL Server 2016 and has even more power in SQL Server 2022. This technology minimizes data transfer and transformation processes like extract, transform, and load (ETL) because it allows data to remain in its original place and format. It enables businesses to run T-SQL queries across relational databases, big data systems, and cloud-based data sources.
The following list shows the hardware and software layers in the solution stack.
We tested AMD EPYC 9334 processors for the SQL Server 2022 database instances because running T-SQL queries for data analytics requires a fast response time. The AMD EPYC 9334 processors have 32 cores per socket operating at 2.7 GHz by default with L3 cache size of up to 128 MB per socket which offers the horsepower for any data analytic workloads.
Dell ObjectScale was used for object storage. Dell ObjectScale is a software defined enterprise-grade object storage. Built with a scale-out architecture, ObjectScale clusters expand from a few terabytes to petabytes and beyond without limits on the number of object stores, buckets, or objects stored. Clusters can start as small as three nodes and scale into the thousands.
ObjectScale Replication enables objects to be replicated anywhere you have an ObjectScale footprint, from the edge to a core data center. By replicating data across the environment, you can protect workloads from outages and share data with teams anywhere in the world. ObjectScale also features enterprise security and data protection capabilities including D@RE, erasure coding, versioning, resource isolation, IAM, WORM features and more.
