In a data center, the target workload of the servers must not exceed 50 percent of their capacity. This is to avoid overloading the servers in a failure scenario. If a server fails in a single data center, the other servers must be able to take over the load of the failed server. Use the formula 1-1/N to calculate the target load for peak operation, where N is the number of application servers in the data center. System administrators must monitor the load of the servers during normal operations and add additional hardware when the load is higher.
For additional protection against site-wide or regional disasters, it can also be beneficial to separate the cluster nodes geographically. A clustering solution allows failover between cluster nodes on different cloud subnets, or in geographically separated locations.
