Figure 5 shows the effect of SLs on two Oracle databases. In this test, two SLOB workloads run without interruption or change. The SL of the workload represented by the top line is set to the Diamond SL (simulating a key mission critical application) and does not change. The SG of the other workload, which the blue line represent, starts at Bronze SL and is changed every 30 minutes until it reaches the Diamond SL.
Figure 5 shows that as the “caged” application improves its SL, its IOPS improves as well. However, as that application starts to consume more system resources, it may slightly lower the mission critical application performance that is using Diamond SL all along. This example demonstrates the value of setting a lower priority SL to lower priority applications.
