PowerMax local replications such as snapshots and clones natively benefit from efficient data reduction due to shared storage allocations and thin provisioning. However, when host-based copies are made, PowerMax deduplication comes into effect. Deduplication is especially effective for data copies that are aligned to the PowerMax track size, which is 128 KB. Since Oracle ASM Allocation Unit size is aligned at 1 MB, 4 MB, or higher granularity, copy operations of data in ASM work well with PowerMax dedupe.
The following example demonstrates the PowerMax deduplication feature when using RMAN duplicate command to create a host-based copy of an Oracle database.
