Over the last ten years, the Public Cloud has dramatically gained in popularity as it offers consumers of IT technology convenience and freedom of choice. Customers can choose among a broad range of cloud consumption models, and large and small suppliers fulfill a broad range of market requirements. IT managers are making these choices instead of investing in traditional on-premises computing infrastructure, which has been the standard for companies running enterprise applications since the 1960s.
Although some options available in the Public Cloud offer excellent value for customers, it does not necessarily mean that a cloud solution is appropriate for every workload, and it clearly provides a poor return on investment for resource-intensive workloads.
To avoid the high cost of running workloads in the Public Cloud, IT managers should consider how to invest in on-premises infrastructure to deliver the services to their users that they are demanding. The solution is not to get rid of that on-premises infrastructure but to turn it into the type of service capability that has become commonplace in the Public Cloud. In so doing, the customer benefits from the cost savings available from maintaining a modern on-premises IT infrastructure.
