The diagram below shows two options for integrating VMware ESXi with PowerFlex storage. Every PowerFlex implementation requires two primary software components to access and manage storage, the Storage Data Client(SDC) and the Storage Data Server (SDS). The left side of the diagram depicts a high-level overview of a two-layer disaggregated implementation. The SDC is installed on 4 ESXi compute nodes and the SDS is installed on 4 separate PowerFlex storage only nodes. This architecture relies on the Ethernet network for both application access and storage access.
The right half of the above diagram shows that for HCI implementations both the SDC and SDS (denoted as H) are installed on every node in the cluster along with VMware ESXi. In HCI mode there are no storage only nodes. Every server is used for both application computing requirements and storage management.
This solution validates the HCI implementation of VMware with PowerFlex for CV and VMS workloads.
